Do Goldendoodles Shed?

It’s possible for people with dog allergies to own a dog, but they have to take extra precautions. Finding a dog that doesn’t shed can go a long way to help dog owners with pet allergies. Do Goldendoodles shed, or are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic? Like most things in life, the answer is complicated.

Do Goldendoodles shed?

The quick and easy answer is that many Goldendoodles have a non-shedding coat. Most Goldendoodles have either a non-shedding coat, or low-shedding coat.

What makes answering this question complicated is that Goldendoodles are a designer dog breed. Designer dog traits aren’t always predictable. Goldendoodle puppies have Standard Poodle and Golden Retriever parentage. Poodles are considered hypoallergenic because they have non-shedding coats, or shed very lightly. Golden Retrievers do shed, however.

F1b Goldendoodles are the most likely to have a non-shedding coat, but any Goldendoodle can develop a non-shedding coat. It’s also possible for an F1b Goldendoodle to have a low-shedding coat, and two different F1b Goldendoodle puppies from the same litter may shed different amounts.

How can you tell if your Goldendoodle will shed?

If a non-shedding Goldendoodle is important to you, your best bet is an F1b puppy. Again any Goldendoodle can inherit a non-shedding coat, but F1b puppies (a puppy with a first generation Goldendoodle parent and a Standard Poodle parent) typically have more predictable traits, and are more likely to have a non-shedding coat.

There’s no way of knowing whether or not your dog will shed before she is born, though. Even Poodles, which are considered hypoallergenic dogs, can shed. However, if your Goldendoodle sheds, she generally won’t shed as much as other dog breeds.

If you want a dog that doesn’t shed for allergy reasons, remember that there is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog. Hypoallergenic simply means that a dog the dog does not shed as much as other dogs, and is less likely to provoke allergic responses. People are allergic to different things, and all dogs produce allergens from saliva, urine, and dander regardless of whether or not they have a shedding coat.
